The archaeological site of Agios Georgios, Pegeia municipality, is a famous pilgrimage site in the region. Excavations that began in the 1950s found important evidence of an early Christian settlement that existed on the cape and its southern slope during Roman rule and the early Christian era.
The necropolis (city of the dead) with its rock-cut tombs is located on the top of the cliff. The pilgrimage site of Agios Georgios itself lies between the basilicas and the necropolis.
The small chapel from the late 13th, early 14th century was named after Agios Georgios, as was the stone-built church of Agios Georgios of more recent date.
